Cuba
has several names. Among them, the Island of Rum. Columbus
brought to Cuba in this second trip from the Canaries,
the sugar cane. He didn’t imaging that he would
define History, economy and a new taste. The Cuban rum
is distinguished in the world as one of the best, thanks
to the fertile lands, rain, sun and the climate of this
prodigious island.
With the cultivation of sugar cane, the black slaves
substituted the aborigines and then they created first
the guarapo, using rudimentary machines to produce it,
then in the sugar mills, and later on in the modern
industries. The guarapo became alcohol, and then liquor
was born. It was famous because of its transparency
and pleasant scent that, distillation after distillation,
gave place to the most exquisite rum. It wasn’t
until the XIX century that it became a drink of first
quality and competence.
From that moment on different brands and distilleries
emerged, such as Campión, Jiquí, Bocoy,
Albuerne, Bacardí and Havana Club, among the
most known. During almost all the XIX century, the Bacardí
Rum was considered the best and the most prolific exporter,
and thanks to the financial resources and publicity,
it established an international score. In 1960, with
the Cuban Revolution, the private companies were nationalized
and the owners of Bacardí emigrate.
The Rum industry continued its development. It was
reorganized and enlarged. The old Havana Club brand
was used to export. It was founded in Cárdenas
city in 1878, and La Guiraldilla, the symbol of the
city of Havana was added, also known today as the graphic
symbol of the rum that has traveled the world.
Other important rums have achieved great result in
the international market such as Caney, Legendario,
Matusalén, Varadero, Bucanero and Caribbean Club.
They are all genuine messengers of a flavor that identifies
Cuba, the Island of Rum.
